Tribute To Otunba Michael Olasubomi Balogun - By Otunba Abiodun Onanuga

"You cannot live a normal existence if you have not taken care of a problem that affects your life and the lives of others..." - Wole Soyinka

Today, we gather with both heavy hearts and tear streaked smiles in profound awe and due respect to the eventful life and worthy legacies of our dearly departed Otunba Michael Olasubomi Balogun, CON-a highly distinguished personality whose life was a testament to the fortitude, forthrightness, benevolence and accomplishments.

Born into the distinguished Ashiru Balogun family in Ijebu-Ode on 9th March 1934, Otunba Subomi was destined to leave an indelible mark on the world. His formative years at Ijebu-Ode Grammar School and Igbobi College in Lagos led him to embark on a remarkable journey taking him from the halls of legal academia to the pinnacle of business success.

His pursuit of education led him to the prestigious London School of Economics, where he honed his skills and laid a sturdy foundation for an extraordinary career. From the very beginning, his thirst for knowledge and passion for justice set him on a remarkable path. And with his law degree in hand, he returned home, ready to make a difference.

His visionary leadership played a pivotal role in his founding of City Securities and later First City Merchant Bank (FCMB), highlighting his entrepreneurial spirit and foresight. Under his guidance, FCMB emerged as a trailblazer in the world of investment banking, forever changing the financial services landscape. The passing of Otunba Michael Olasubomi Balogun is mourned by countless individuals whose lives he touched and enriched. His impact as a prominent figure in Ijebuland and beyond cannot be overstated. His name will forever be celebrated as an emblem of grace and accomplishment.

He was my mentor and I'm proud to be one of the beneficiaries of his altruism whom he encouraged by undertaking the construction of many projects on his behalf including Otunba Tunwase National Paediatric Hospital (which he later donated to the University of Ibadan) and several FCMB branches just to mention a few. Otunba was a royal fashionista and a role model for the young generation. His children are well educated and nurtured to respect elders and their colleagues despite their enormous material heritage.

As we bid him farewell, let us not only celebrate his achievements but also carry forward the lessons he taught us. His heart overflowed with generosity and kindness and he dedicated himself to numerous charitable causes, reminding us all of the true meaning of wealth-the ability to give back and make a lasting impact. May his wonderful soul find eternal rest in the true God. May the good Lord also grant his darling consort, Olori Abimbola, his darling sister, Chief (Mrs) Ronke Atere, the children and the entire family the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.

"Omo ade'le teji teji, Omo a f'aran p'ojo, Omo afi'gba sa'wo loke'moro, ki ero ya wa buna. Sunre o"

May you continue to rest in the bosom of the Lord . Amen
