Mr. Olubode & Mrs. Aduke Thorpe

OTUNBA MICHAEL OLASUBOMI BALOGUN Nobody is evaluated as an Angel whilst living but Otunba Michael Olasubomi Balogun, by hindsight could be said to be an Angel of goodwill to all and sundry, whose paths crossed his. When he ventured into Brokering Stocks and Traded as First City Securities, I met Mr. (later Chief, Later Otunba) Balogun at his desk, on a Floor of Mandilas House, Broad Street, Lagos. I had gone to complain that my Mobil IPO Application was rejected. It was First City Securities that Brokered the Transaction. Mr. Balogun immediately requested an enquiry into my inability to make the list. I was shown that my cheque for the purchase of Mobil Shares bore no signature (in my haste to submit my Application, I forgot to sign my cheque). I was allowed to sign my cheque and subsequently I benefited from owning Mobil Shares. Otunba Balogun did not indulge me because I was his In-Law, neither did he consider me for being an Igbobian, nor did he remember any other consideration. He was naturally a problem solver as well as a Peace maker. As much as it is within his power, he assisted whoever was in need. Otunba Balogun loved Igbobi College like he loved his Family. He epitomized all that is characteristically enduring as Hallmark of an Igbobian – A noble Nigerian indeed! He never failed to support every Event of Igbobi College magnanimously. I confirm that Otunba Balogun spent a lifetime as willing, able and ready Benefactor to all that is Igbobi College. – The Institution, Old and present Boys, Teaching and non-Teaching members of Staff were beneficiaries of Otunba Balogun’s goodwill. Fast track from 1970s to 2010s: Otunba wanted to see me at his home on Glover Road for a Church matter. Ordinarily, Otunba did not dabble in “Churchitics.” I was reluctant to meet him on a matter which I insisted should go one way only. Otunba agreed to my preconditions for the Meeting, and I had no further excuse for discussion, under four eyes. As I left his Palatial abode, he expressed a concern, that he held genuinely, that of preserving the peaceful orderliness in the Church of God. On 23rd April 2023, Otunba Balogun and Olori Tutu Balogun were at Mattins of Cathedral Church of Christ, Marina, Lagos. On that Occasion, my wife and I had an Altar Call for our 50th Wedding Anniversary. Otunba Balogun accompanied us – with no prior notice from me - to the Altar Rails for Thanksgiving. There was no inkling of impending and devastating news of 18th May 2023. Otunba Balogun despite what must have been frailty of his physical being, left his seat together with Olori Tutu to accompany my wife and I with many well-wishers, to the Altar for our Thanksgiving. He stood for over fifteen minutes by the front row of the Transept, whilst he waited to shake our hands after all well-wishers had expressed their felicitations, in order to complete his congratulatory gesture for us. Truly Otunba Balogun had a large heart! He will be sorely missed. May God console Olori Tutu, Children and all left to mourn the passing of Otunba Michael Olasubomi Balogun. May his gentle soul rest in Peace. Amen. Mr. Olubode and Mrs. Aduke Thorpe.
